VCE subjects
My VCE subjects in Year 12 were English, General Maths, Biology, Health & Human Development, and Australian History (which I did by distance education, everything via the post).
The best advice I had to help me get through VCE – my dear Mum, Marls, said, “Do the best you can with what you’ve got and then don’t worry about the rest”. This helped me keep things in perspective and to not sweat the things I couldn’t change.
Favourite subject and why Biology with Miss McMillan. Interesting content, in a really small class and with a teacher who was supportive and made learning fun.
Course and campus
I studied at Charles Sturt University in Albury and completed a Bachelor of Health Science (Speech Pathology).
Current career and what you love I’m a speech pathologist. For the past 10 years I’ve worked in public health and education in regional Victoria and Melbourne. I currently work in the school readiness program in Geelong, supporting kindergarten educators and families to encourage children’s communication skills in preparation for school. I love working with other people to support children’s skills at a community level.
Opportunities Tyrrell provided
I had lots of opportunities for leadership and social roles at Tyrrell. I was one of the two school captains in Year 12 and had roles on the Student Representative Council. These opportunities gave me lots of practice talking in different forums and with public speaking. Having practice with public speaking at school was so helpful when it came to presentations at Uni and I now do a lot of public speaking in my job.
Favourite Tyrrell memories
I have lots of happy memories from Tyrrell. I loved that all the students and staff knew each other really well which provided a great sense of community. I’m very lucky to still have some of my closest friends from high school too. I also love the memories of activities/excursions that only kids in the country would have (eg: canoeing in a paddock dam for Outdoor Ed).
