Friday 2 February was the first session for the Year 8 Outdoor Ed students out at Green Lake. We started the session with some relay games where two students from each team had to paddle out to their teammates, who were waiting in deep water to be rescued. Students had to paddle out as far as possible to rescue one team member at a time and bring that person back to the bank. We completed several versions of this activity, changing the rules with each attempt. Then students paired up and hopped into either a canoe or a kayak. Students learnt some basic skills such as emergency stops, sweeps and basic forward and backward paddling. Students were able to ‘raft up’ which means bringing all boats together as one.
At the end of the lesson, some students attempted their first capsize drill.
