Students in Year 9 are learning about different types of chemical reactions and last week were introduced to neutralisation reactions, where acids and bases react to form a salt and water. Students completed an acid base titration (a senior type of chemistry practical), where they learnt some new scientific equipment such as a glass volumetric pipette/bulb and a burette. Students first practiced how to use this equipment before completing a titration where students used phenolphthalein as a pH indicator. Students carefully added the acid to the base, using the burette and monitored for a colour change, from the signature purple colour to a colourless solution. The class was given strict accuracy instructions with the prize being chocolate. One group got within 0.1mL for each trial which is amazing considering they had never used this equipment before.
